The Medieval or Middle Ages in Europe lasted from the 5th to the 15th century. During the early Middle Ages, the Catholic Church commissioned many art pieces. The artists decorated churches, and the oldest examples of Medieval art exist in them. Many of the subjects in art are biblical or historical themes, with many Christian symbols. The monks created illuminated manuscript. They beautifully decorated their holy books with precious stones and metals. They wrote and decorated the pages with beautiful calligraphy, designs, and motifs.

Tapestries were a popular art form in Medieval times. They provided both warmth and decoration.Usually, Biblical or historical themes were used. The Unicorn Tapestries depict the search, hunt and capturing of the unicorn. The white unicorn is often used as a symbol of Christ. This tapestry depicts the hunters in search for the unicorn. They are carrying spears, but the unicorn can only be tamed and lured only by a virgin maiden. The white unicorn symbolizes purity and innocence. This may be referencing to a maiden before she is married.
